New Blog Series: What I Read This Month

I’ve always wanted to be one of those #booklovers that could consume 3 books a week, unable to put down the pages that were too inspiring, mysterious, romantic, and funny to leave unread. But I’ve also always struggled with reading physical books, and I never could figure out why. I enjoyed reading as a kid; I have a wide vocabulary. I am literate, for goodness sake. Why does getting through a book feel like torture?

When I began to question if I had ADHD and Autism, I was drawn to the common trait that AuDHD people can struggle with reading, whether a person has dyslexia or not. Reading feels like a chore to my brain and I get distracted while reading. I can read the same paragraph 4 times before realizing I’m stuck in a loop. I struggle to recall details I’ve read and can be confused as I work my way through chapters trying to follow the plot.

When I shared my thoughts and findings with my therapist, she suggested audio books. It’s not that I didn’t know audio books existed, it just never occurred to me that I would actually enjoy them. But I do like podcasts, and audio books are essentially podcast stories. Most audio books are between 6 and 10 hours long, which means I can also get through a single book during one or two night shifts. My dreams of being a #booklover are not thwarted yet!

So I’ve decided to start a blog series that highlights all the books I read each month! I’m already planning to revisit some of my childhood classics and some of the “traditional” literature I’ve never consumed, as well as whatever popular fiction catches my fancy. Let me know if you wanna chat about anything from my list! (No guarantee that my ADHD will let me recall all the juicy details, but I’ll do my best!) And of course, I’m always open to suggestions, so let me know if there’s something YOU think I should read!
