"I was testing you...and you passed with flying colors."

I already knew that I wanted to intern at GX Creative before I even got up from the table that Friday, so when I returned to school after Spring Break, I emailed Chris to let him know that I was in.

Normally, I would have called, but unfortunately, I had just broken my phone and had it sent to get fixed. I did receive it back in the mail a few days later, and when I hadn't heard back from Chris, I picked up the phone and called him.

"Chris, it's Charly. I was calling to let you know that I am excited about the internship opportunity!"

After some conversation, I brought up my unanswered email.

"Actually, I did receive your email. I was testing you. I wanted to see if you would be bold enough to pick up the phone and have a real conversation with me, and you passed with flying colors."

The shock slowly wore off my face and I think Chris could tell I was smiling through the phone.

"Technology is a great key," Chris explained, "but when it keeps us from establishing a human connection, then it becomes a problem. I want you to use your technology as a key, but don't ever let it keep you from making connections."

Life Lesson Learned: Be Bold.
